The Agulhas banks have become known as a premier Marling fishing ground. In 2007, the Two Oceans Marlin Tournament, the 1st Marlin Tournament in Western Cape waters, was held in Struisbaai. The name “Two Oceans “symbolizes the Southern Tip of Africa with the separation of Indian and Atlantic oceans and the resultant turbulent weather and rough seas. Marlin have been seen and caught in Struisbaai for years, with Trail Withuhn landing an African record Striped Marlin a few years ago.

During the 2007 2 Oceans Marlin Tournament only 9 boats competed, with 7 fish recorded. The weather during 2007 competition allowed only 3 days fishing, making the 14 Marlin sightings and 25 confirmed Marlin strikes remarkable. In 2008 a total of 24 boats entered and what a marvelous time was had. The weather was fantastic with 4 days fishing on a calm sea with waters ranging from 22 – 24’C. Yellowtail, Skipjack and even Wahoo kept anglers busy when trolling for Marlin became too tedious.Considering the day to day tallies, this happened rather seldom. 12 Marlin were caught and released, 66 strikes were recorded, but no Marlin were killed.
